If we are talking about gigs I saw recently, I would have to name Joey Baron. He has a simple set up and gets every possible sound out of it. His dedication to drumming is obvious and he is certainly someone that tries new stuff on the spot -as mentioned in the first post. Great topic [img]smile.gif[/img]

CL--great thread. I need the emotional connection too in drumming. Some amazing drummers give me the cerebral vibe without adding anything that feels authentically "from" them. It's hard to stay interested when I feel like someone is just giving me the product of their mind and past study.
If reckless abandon is your thing, you MUST see Chris Dave sometime--he wore me out this way with MeShell NdegeOcello's recent tours. Both times I saw him he played like there was NO tomorrow and didn't give a F*** what anyone thought. It was educational. No restraint, no sense of holding back even when he was playing quietly/softly, no sense that he was playing "licks" but rather just creating everything from scratch all the time. He's always giving you pure unfiltered Chris. It was like he was channeling the ebb and flow of some huge, amoral energy source--it was all about him but not even at all about him. He reminded me of Bozzio on this sense, whom other people have noted here. When Chris finished he slammed his drumsticks on the snare and unapologetically walked off stage as they clattered to the ground. It may have been a performance of arrogance or punk-ass attitude but it sure felt authentic.
Maybe it's something associated more with certain genres than others? Like punk and gospel are almost mystical--you're supposed to pull your fire from some external/divine source and serve it up for common consumption. Rock and metal came from this forge of raw expression too but it seems like they've been heavily assimilated and compromised by corporate culture at this point. Plus, as a tradition ages so do its proponents--I think it's hard to keep open this channel to reckless abondon as a person ages. Some clearly do it, no question, but others get used to becoming a kind of "performance" of themselves, almost a charicature of who they were when they broke through.
With any kind of success or splash into the "zone" there is the risk of getting attached to how you made it before, and the whole thing becomes habit, and stale. Zen/Buddhist teachings abound with talk of staying present to reality as it is currently, and staying in the "zone" rather than getting stuck on stale formulas and dogma. I think this relates quite directly to the art of making/playing music--to keep fresh and "there" no matter what you have seen, heard, done in the past, no matter what rewards or punishment you project will come later.

I am on a mission to check out Chris Dave... hard to find anything on him though, other than that he's been on the last Me'Shell album and is with Vater sticks now.
Another worthy mention might be Dave King from the renegade jazz trio "The Bad Plus".

I think that Denis Chambers can be pretty mad at times too... quite over-the-top, he seems to have more "feel" than some of the other "technicians".
I always think Gregg Bissonette plays 110% every time he sits down, his playing screams passion and emotion at me. Carlos' playing too...

Hey Chris - just wanted to 'stick up' for Gavin - saw him live with Level 42, and he was on fire! - not studied or controlled in any way. He was egged on all night by Mark King, who pushed him to some real 'in the pocket', solid grooving,played with sweaty determination and real heart. Having grown up listening to and seeing Terry Bozzio live during his days with Zappa and Missing Persons, I agree he was an animal in a live setting. Literally standing when hitting those upper cymbals.
But one drummer no one has mentioned is Elvin Jones. I saw Elvin about 20 years ago at the Village Vanguard and he went absolutely berzerk for all four sets we saw. And he had the biggest smile on his face the entire time.
Vinnie did a tour with the Weather Report tribute band. He totally went for it at the shows at the Iridium. I have also seen him play far more laid back so I guess it depends on who he is playing with.

Hey Milkman, nice one mentioning DAVE ABBRUZZESE. He was the reason why I started getting serious about drums, he played 110% EVERYTIME, even in the studio and really had an all-out "no-holds-barred" style which was obviously too good for Eddie Vedder.
Yeah I gueuss this post was originally about recent drummers playing like they mean it, but it's nice to go back and pay some respect to guys like Elvin, Moon - oh and who could forget BUDDY RICH!?
